The Importance of Food Pulses in Benthic-Pelagic Coupling Processes of Passive Suspension Feeders

چکیده
Benthic-pelagic coupling processes and the quantity of carbon transferred from water column to benthic suspension feeders need multiple intensive sampling approaches where several environmental variables benthos performance are quantified. Here, activity, dietary composition, capture rates three Mediterranean gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata, Eunicella singularis, Leptogorgia sarmentosa) were assessed in an cycle considering different such as seston concentration quality (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, zooplankton), colony branch patterns, energetic input single species (i.e., mixotrophic heterotrophic). The showed clear differences their impact on concentration. Paramuricea most densely distributed, a greater near bottom seston. lowest E. singularis could be explained by its mixotrophy branching pattern. sarmentosa had similar having much more complex pattern than order magnitude smaller number colonies per meter square other two octocorals. amount ingested peaks may cover non-neglectable proportion potential fluxes.

The role of cell replacement in benthic–pelagic coupling by suspension feeders
Benthic-pelagic coupling through suspension feeders and their detrital pathways is integral to carbon transport in oceans. In food-poor ecosystems however, a novel mechanism of carbon recycling has been proposed that involves direct uptake of dissolved carbon by suspension feeders followed by shedding of cells as particulate carbon. We studied cell replacement rates in a range of cold-water spo...

The amphipod Monoporeia a&is (LindstrGm) exhibits long-term population oscillations in oligotrophic Lake V&tern. Correlation showed profundal oxygen and temperature, and intraspecific and predatory interactions to be poor explanatory variables. Conversely, the interannual variability in food availability-diatom biovolumewas highly correlated with amphipod total density at t + 1 yr and the densi...

Time-series measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate nitrogen (PN) fluxes, sediment community composition, and sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) were made at the Hawaii Ocean Time-series station (Sta. ALOHA, 4730m depth) between December 1997 and January 1999. POC and PN fluxes, estimated from sediment trap collections made at 4000m depth (730m above bottom), ...

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...
